wTimetable - Conflicts (Manual Clashes): Ability to Resolve Teacher Conflicts

Modules > wTimetable > Conflicts

The latest update changes the Analyse & Resolve Conflict page for Teacher conflicts from a review-only tool into an interactive interface where you can now resolve conflicts directly, with improved layouts, clearer staff organisation, and enhanced tooltips and indicators.

Improved Layout and Indicators

The Analyse Conflict tooltip in the Conflicts popup has been relabelled to Analyse & Resolve Conflict.

Selecting the Analyse & Resolve Conflict icon and choosing Manual Clashes now opens a full-page view instead of a popup. This view includes fixed header rows and columns to make large timetables easier to navigate. The page header has also been updated from Conflict Analysis to Analyse & Resolve Conflict, and the Back button will return you to the Conflicts popup. For two week timetables, you can switch between Week 1 and Week 2 using the tabs.

Staff rows are now displayed alphabetically in the following priority order:

  • The staff member with the conflict.
  • Staff with the same subject and department.
  • Staff with the same department but a different subject.
  • Any split teacher linked to the conflicting class will always appear in the list.
Note: Other staff will only appear if they are selected from the Add/Remove Staff dropdown.

The Add/Remove Staff dropdown has been improved with:

  • A Search field
  • Select All and Clear All options
  • New action buttons:
    • Apply - Applies the selected changes
    • Cancel - Closes the dropdown without saving changes

The following tooltips and indicators have been enhanced:

Period

  • Indicators now display where a Block/NA/Lunch is scheduled within the same year group and band where the conflict occurs. For example: If a conflict occurs in Year 13 Band A, indicators will also appear for all blocks scheduled in Year 13 Band A across all periods.

  • Cross-band blocks display: <Block Full Name> spread to band: <Band Name(s)>".
  • Linked blocks display: <Block Full Name> linked to <Block Full Name>".
  • Split lunch periods now include an L indicator.
Sessions
  • The Staff Type label has been added to the session tooltip, clearly identifying whether a teacher is a Main or Additional staff member.
Staff
  • The information tooltip text has been updated from 'A teacher who also teaches the conflict class' to 'Split teacher with the conflict class'.

Resolve Conflicts

The Manual Clashes page will open in the original view by default, now labelled Analyse. A new view, Resolve, can also be selected.

The two views provide the following functionality:

Analyse
  • Maintains existing functionality.
  • Allows you to highlight like-for-like classes in a colour of your choice, making it easier to review.
Resolve
  • A new view designed to help resolve conflicts.
  • Highlights suggested sessions that can be moved or swapped, clearly showing which sessions are eligible for swapping.

Conflict Resolving - Suggestions

When using the Resolve view:

  • Conflicting sessions are highlighted in with a red border.
  • Sessions that cannot be used to resolve the conflict are greyed out.
  • Sessions that can be used are colour-coded as follows:
      • Green - Ideal swap. Staff teach the same subject and are in the same department.
      • Yellow - Staff are in the same department but do not teach the same subject.
      • Red - Staff who have no direct link to the subject or department (these staff will only appear if they have been manually added to the page).
  • Suggestions do not take the following into account:
      • Timetable Specification rules.
      • Staff Total Contact Time limits.
      • Unscheduled sessions.
      • Scheduled sessions without a Staff member.

Note: Double sessions - the system will grey out periods with breaks, AM and PM, since wTimetable will not allow you to schedule a Double session across them.

Resolving a Conflict

To resolve a Conflict:
  1. Left click on an eligible session.
  2. The Resolve Conflict button will become active.
  3. Click Resolve Conflict to complete the swap.

If additional conflicts remain, the page will stay open for further resolution. If the resolved conflict is the final one, the page will close and return you to the Scheduling page.

Any swaps made will be reflected in both the Scheduling and Curriculum Plan pages.

Note: Double sessions when moved vertically each period is treated as a single session, when moved horizontally both periods are moved together.
